About
Mission
Hungary’s competitive success in the 21st century lies in it’s ideas. There needs to be a place, where some of these ideas can grow. Our mission is simple: to help ideas lift off the ground through education, incubation and play. Our ally in this mission is
Magyar Telekom.
History
Kitchen Budapest was established in 2007 by it’s
visionary founders, who noticed a new generation of young kids, who for the first time were not only consuming, but rather writing and creating technology. They immediatly understood the need for a place that can free up this creative, untapped energy and were quick to convince
Magyar Telekom to stand behind them. Kibu was esatblished the same year. In their common vision, Kitchen Budapest lived as a place, where groundbreaking ideas can grow and freely. Leaders, people and the ways we operate have changed several times at Kitchen Budapest. The vision has not.
„An idea that is developed and put into action is more important than an idea that exists only as an idea.”
Buddha
Operation
Thinking
The first five years of our history was a rollercoaster ride of exciting multidisciplinary ideas, most of them conceptual, reaching the stage of prototypes. (Flip through our
2007-2010 yearbook to see what we’ve been working on.) The world has changed a lot since 2007. Kickstarter.com signals this change well; instead of concepts, people expect to see ideas brought to life. They want to touch, experience and try them. In this sense, we are changing with the world. When choosing our projects, it is becoming an all-important factor, to be able to move beyond a conceptual stage. To take our ideas on the path of realisation further than we used to.
Funding
We are a nonprofit organisation. Our funding has four main sources. Securing the largest bite of our annual operating costs is
Magyar Telekom, standing by our side for over five years now. We also do commissioned work for brands and organisations. Each year we participate in several EU tenders in different fields of our expertise. And finally: in order to guarantee our operation in the long run, in spring of 2012 we have launched our incubation program, and began investing in local startups.

Space
Our base is located in downtown Budapest. Kitchen Budapest lies on the ground floor of a residential building. The available space of over 350 m2 serves as an exhibition centre, a workshop, and a huge open workspace in one. Besides allowing several small teams to work parallel to each other, it adapts well to hosting events and workshops. The space is equipped with professional tools and technical equipment, which help us in building functional prototypes from our ideas.
